For the first time since we started Farthings we have just had to increase our standard package price to £449. What this includes is summarised below. However, if you have completed a lot of the preparatory work the price could be even lower. We time all our work at the rate of £30 an hour so your invoice will be the lower of our package, or hourly rate, plus any extras you opt for which are listed below. As we are a very small company, you get the benefit of your book being dealt with throughout by one of our two partners. You also benefit by us being small, as, under present regulations, VAT is not payable on our fee, or on the purchase of books from us (although e-books do attract VAT). We feel our standard package to be very competitive and in most cases, it is all-inclusive. Why not compare our prices to those of other self-publishing companies? But be sure to jot down our web address as in most cases we find we are at least 50% cheaper and in some cases substantially more! (http://www.farthings-publishing.com)
Our £449 package includes: Accepting and assessing your manuscript. Processing it into book form. This includes agreeing with you a book size, converting your manuscript to this size and formatting the entire book. Adding up to 6 photographs/graphics. Supplying and adding an ISBN both to interior and by barcode to the rear cover. Designing 3, full colour book covers from which you can choose. Alternatively, at extra cost we will provide additional optional covers. Or, if you prefer, you can use your own designer for whom we can provide exact cover measurements and requirements but in this case you will be responsible for their fee. Providing you with a professionally printed proof copy of your book for you to edit. This will also enable us to check our technical layout. After we have made any final corrections which you (or we!) identify from your proof copy - correcting these is included in the price - we will upload all files to our printer who will then be in a position to print as many (or as few) books as you require. From one copy upwards to a million can be printed. The price per book reduces with quantity. Your book will be published and printed to professional bookshop standards. The finished product will normally be a soft-backed book with a full colour, gloss laminated cover, complete with ISBN number. You can opt for a hard cover version of your book, or one with a full colour interior if you prefer. Full colour throughout are much more expensive; hardbacks are more expensive and take longer to arrive as they are printed and bound abroad. We will then send you a fully bound copy of your book together with an invoice for the balance owing to Farthings. Under present guidelines VAT is not payable. If you decide to order books from us these will be invoiced separately, and you can reorder over at least the following 12 months.
If you decide to go ahead: If you instruct Farthings to publish and print your work, we will normally summarise your requirements by letter and ask you to sign one copy by way of agreement. A deposit of £150 is usually asked from authors unknown to us, to secure your agreement; the balance of the fee is payable on completion of the work undertaken and will be invoiced at that time.
Book orders: Finally, and without obligation, you can order from us as few or as many copies of your book as you require, from 1 upwards. We will provide you with a quote for various quantities as part of your balance invoice for the publishing work we have undertaken. The average cost is around £5 a book, plus postage, but this can vary upwards or downwards as prices depend on format, page count, book size and type of binding. Quantity discount for book purchase is given, the percentage rate of which rises the more books you order.
Manuscripts: We prefer manuscripts to be submitted to us online by e-mail, or by mail CD, memory stick etc. Copyright of your book contents remains yours at all times. Our fee includes all preparation, digital typesetting, formatting, layout and design of a plain text manuscript of up to 100,000 words. You may include up to 6 photos/graphics within our package price for the interior of your book. There will be a percentage supplement for books of over 100,000 words; or for more graphics than 6; or for cases where manuscripts are submitted typed (ie not on computer), or are handwritten, or in cases where interviews are needed for us to tape record your book, from which we will then type the manuscript and proceed to lay out your book. However, in all cases a guaranteed maximum price will be quoted to you at the outset as soon as we know your requirements. This is without any obligation on your part to proceed. Also remember, at the time this web site is being updated (September 2017), no VAT is payable on our fees or on the purchase of print copies of your book.
Extras which may be charged: If you require any of the following the cost will be additional to the cost of our standard package. Photographs/graphics (in excess of the 6 which are included in our package) for scanning, improving, sizing, cropping, aligning, and placing and adding captions - £5 each. Typing into computer from audio tape or typed document, £20 an hour or pro rata. Typing from handwritten manuscript, £20 an hour or pro rata Typing Poetry or tabulated work - £20 an hour or pro rata Proof-reading, editing and correction - £20 an hour or pro rata.
