WHY SELF-PUBLISH?
The publishing world can be a nightmare of rejections and disappointments. Ideally, when a budding author has written his or her manuscript and decided they would like to see it published, their first stop should be a literary agent.
Alas! Most literary agents do not accept unsolicited manuscripts and finding one willing to take you on as a new author, can be an almost impossible task. Approaching large publishers direct can also be disappointing, as they are normally only interested in existing, commercially viable authors.
Self-publishing can be a viable option although this route too can also be a nightmare, but this is where we can help!
Most large self-publishing companies have sizeable overheads so are likely to charge heavily to publish your work for you. However, it needn’t cost a fortune to get your work self-published and this is where Farthings Publishing can assist. We can take your work from raw beginnings to a professionally laid out and printed final copy of bookshop standard. As we have produced and published our own work, we know what is required.
Remember that every well-known author was once an unknown writer, so yours could be the next best seller. If you don’t try you won't succeed!
When we self-publish for you, you pay our costs for the preparatory work involved, and for the printing. For the first 12 months your book is advertised by Farthings on the websites of Amazon, Lulu, and other large online booksellers. After the first 12 months if your book has stopped selling, we may stop advertising your book online; if it is still selling we are likely to extend the 12 month period.
For these first 12 months and after the print costs and seller's commission is deducted, net royalties are sent in bulk to our account periodically and we then pass these on to you less Farthings' nominal charge of 50p a copy sold. This helps cover our distribution costs as royalties arrive in bulk and we then need to distribute them amongst our authors.
You will appreciate that we cannot guarantee that your book will be a best seller! That will depend very much on the content and whether your book attracts favourable comment.
Whilst we cannot add positive criticism about your book on Lulu and Amazon your family and friends can add their comments and this often helps sales of a book.
Whilst we will advertise and sell your book through Lulu, Amazon, and other online booksellers, the most profitable way for you to sell your book will be by yourself through local contacts.
This is probably the hardest part of self-publishing and can involve a lot of work and effort on your part. However, if you have a positive attitude and believe in what you have written, it is well worth the effort.
The sheer excitement of seeing all your hard work and effort, finally in print, can be a tremendous thrill.
Once we have got you to proof copy stage you can then order as few or as many copies of your book as you need – from 1 copy upwards, at an average cost of around £6 a copy depending on size, format, page-count and quantity. There is a rising discount depending on the number of books ordered.
Finally, check the prices of the competition to find what they will charge to publish your book and get you to print stage! You might be surprised!
